Hiking Sleeping Gear

A good night decides the next day on the trail. Hiking sleeping gear is a three-part system of sleeping bag, pad and shelter. It only works as a whole, for hikers and reservists alike.

The most common mistake is pairing a warm bag with a thin pad. Cold comes from the ground, and the bag alone cannot fix it. Match the sleeping bag comfort rating and the pad R-value to the season. Around 0 °C comfort and roughly R 3 covers three-season trips. Winter demands considerably more of both. Choose a tent, tarp or shelter cape by weight and expected weather.

Our team has slept outdoors through every Estonian season. The advice you get here is blunt about what actually keeps you warm.
