Thermal Underwear
Thermal underwear is the foundation of every layering system: the layer against your skin that moves sweat away and keeps you dry — and a dry body is a warm body.
Choose between merino wool and synthetic sets or separates, in fabric weights from light (around 150 g/m²) to serious winter grades (260 g/m² and up). Quality base layers are among the most useful personal items conscripts are allowed to bring along, and experienced reservists recommend them without exception. During cold winters think in layers - merino woolnet as base and then next layer of synthetic/cotton/merino thermal on top. Only then come fleeces, thermal jackets, combat shirts, etc. The same logic applies to your feet with merino socks, topped by functional shirts.
Our experience shows that merino woolnet (likes of Aclima brand) is above others by a lot and should be a compulsory element for every soldier and hiker alike. After an active period it dries extremely fast and keeps you warm all the time. It can be worn in extensive periods as it does not stink - it is just that good!
