Mats & Mattresses

Most body heat on a night outside disappears into the ground, not the air. That makes a sleeping mat the most underrated piece of any sleep system. Without insulation underneath, even an excellent bag loses the fight.

A mat's warmth is expressed as an R-value. R 1 to 2 covers summer. R 3 to 4 handles three seasons. Winter nights in the forest call for R 5 or higher. Closed-cell foam mats are cheap and nearly indestructible. Self-inflating mats balance comfort against weight. An air mattress gives maximum comfort in camp. The range runs from soldier-style roll mats to thicker mattresses for longer stays. Judge the mat together with your sleeping bag as one system.
