A fleece is the most dependable and versatile mid-layer in any clothing system - it has its place in every season. It insulates even when damp, dries fast and weighs little. Hikers and reservists alike keep one within reach.
Thin pullovers around 100 g/m² go over a base layer. Heavy 300g/m² jackets handle static duty in the cold. Duty-oriented cuts add shoulder pockets, loop panels and reinforcement where harness straps wear through ordinary knitwear. Fleece blocks no wind, so plan a shell over it. In deep cold add an insulated winter jacket on top and a wicking shirt underneath. Helikon-Tex and Mil-Tec lead the selection.
