When comparing plates, weigh protection level (commonly NIJ III to IV), material — ceramic, UHMWPE polyethylene or steel — and weight; for helmets, look at the cut (high-cut/FAST versus full-cut) and accessory mounts. A higher rating always costs grams, so choose against a realistic threat picture rather than the biggest number.
