Where a plate carrier needs plates and a chest rig covers only the front of the chest, a tactical vest spreads pouches across the whole upper body and sits well over thicker clothing. Check adjustability at the shoulders and sides — one size fits most, but make sure any attached mag pouches match your weapon platform.
