With Soft Ballistics
A plate carrier with soft ballistics combines two layers of protection: soft armour inside the vest gives fragmentation protection and usually covers a larger area than the hard plate. Combined, soft and hard ballistics can even achieve protection against armour-piercing rounds — while for some tasks, fragmentation protection alone is enough.
Soft armour is rated primarily against handgun rounds and shell fragments — models run up to NIJ IIIA; against rifle calibres you still need hard plates. A carrier like this weighs more than a standard plate carrier, so be honest about how much protection your role actually requires.
