Tarps
A tarp is the lightest way to carry a roof. Guy lines and poles turn this waterproof panel into a shelter within minutes. The same sheet works as rain cover, lean-to and gear protection.
Check three things. For solo sleeping, start from a size of about 2 x 3 m. The number of attachment points sets how many pitch configurations you get. Siliconised nylon is lightest, while polyester holds its shape better. NATO-style shelter halves with buttoned edges join with a partner's into a two-man shelter. The range covers Helikon-Tex and Mil-Tec. At night the sheet also shields your sleeping bag from dew. It is a lighter alternative to a tent.
This selection leans on the experience of our colleagues in Kaitseliit, the Estonian Defence League. These tarps have been tested in real rain.
