Passive hearing protection — ear muffs and plugs with no electronics — works every time and in any weather, with no battery to die. Simplicity is also the budget option: nothing to charge, and prices stay below electronic models.

The deciding figure is attenuation: passive muffs and foam plugs reach SNR values up to about 35 dB. For magnum calibres or indoor ranges, double up your hearing protection — plugs in, muffs on top. If you need to hear commands or conversation while protected, step over to the active models instead.
