Compasses

A GPS battery dies, a compass does not. It is the navigation backup for conscripts, reservists, hunters and hikers alike. Moving by map and compass remains a basic soldier skill no app replaces.

A baseplate model is the fastest tool for map work and the most common choice on exercises. A mirror model adds precise bearings to distant landmarks. For military use, pick a dial that carries mils alongside degrees. Luminous markings help during night navigation. A liquid-filled capsule settles the needle in about a second and keeps working in freezing temperatures. Round out the kit with other hiking equipment and hiking knives and tools.

Order early before a reservist training event. That leaves time for the kit to arrive and for bearings practice before you head into the woods.
